Good Morning Ladies!
I really don't know if this is the place for it, but thought I would share a 'green idea'
A few months back, my husband went through a fresh avacado stage, and after he ate the last one, I took the pit before he could toss it in the trash.
I found a large mouth jar, 3 toothpicks and cleared a place in my kitchen window for the jar. I place the toothpicks in the pit about halfway up, spaced in thirds around it. I then put it in the window and filled the jar full of water.
It was like watching a science experiment come true. Slowly the skin split and then a tap root appeared and then a stalk came up the top.
I am happy to announce my tree has 6 leaves (he lost one when he fell off the ledge while someone was opening the window... so be careful if you do this!)
He has been potted in planting soil and gravel and is now happily spending time outside. If the squirrels leave him alone he will become a nice house plant/tree. I do not expect any avacadoes tho.
I started him in October, and in February, my daughter started a sweet potato she was given at a 4-H conference. It reminded me of doing the same thing when my kids were younger and also when I was younger myself.
What a fun way to show our children how things grow, and how sometimes what we'd normally consider trash, can provide us with oxgen. Carrot tops that have some small growth can grow in to a fern looking plant.
Give it a try and let me know how you do.
